Biography[]
Khlyen Kin Rit was the former King of Qresh and Arkyn and a Level 6 RAC Agent who worked out of the RAC Office of Interstellar Expansion.[1]
Khlyen is originally from Qresh and a member of Land Kin Rit, the first of the ten royal ruling families of The Quad. When his daughter Aneela was a child, he took her and a scientific team to Arkyn to try to colonize the moon, and ultimately found a source of Green Plasma which turned the team into Hullen.[2] It was then that the Qreshi royalty struck Land Kin Rit from their registry.
During the early days of their transformations, Aneela told Khlyen that "the Lady who lives in the Green" told her that she couldn't trust him anymore. To keep Aneela from communicating with the Lady, Khlyen isolated her within a "mirror box" for centuries, devoid of any plasma that the Lady could use to speak to her. Aneela became lonely, and used the plasma from her own body to visit her old happy memories as a way to cope. Eventually, her loneliness got to the point that watching wasn't enough, so she brought a younger version of herself from the Green out into the real world. Aneela named the girl Yalena, after her mother and Khlyen's wife. When Khlyen discovered this, he manipulated Aneela into letting him steal her memories of Yalena's existence, claiming that it was the only way to protect his daughters from the Lady and ignoring Aneela when she tried to protest.[3] The memories he stole were placed in a storage container called the Remnant, and Yalena was taken to be raised in a royal harem on Keffree. Khlyen planned to kill her, but she reminded him so much of Aneela when she was young that he found himself unable to do so. To hide her true origins from her, he told her that he was sent by her father to tutor her and restore honor to the House of Yardeen. Khlyen trained young Yalena as an assassin and covert operative, teaching her unarmed combat and weapon skills, intelligence and interrogation techniques, and all about the different types of poisons, including how to identify and cure every type of poisoning.[4] During this time, he emotionally scarred her by forcing her to kill people in numerous ways from the time she was eight years old until she ran away from him as an adult. Often, he would not tell her who she was killing or why.
Eventually, Yalena married a prince, as she had been raised to do. On the day of her wedding, Khlyen told her that the song and dance he had taught her for her wedding day were actually a hypnotic technique to lull her husband into a sense of complacency so she could take the poisoned strings of the sitara she was taught to play and slit his throat. However, Khlyen killed the prince instead.[5][6] This prompted Dutch to take Lucy and try to escape from Khlyen forever, but he simply followed her to the Quad and remained hidden from her, biding his time until she proved that she was ready to kill again. He was also involved in the Qreshi coup.[7][8]
After John takes a kill warrant in Yalena (now calling herself Dutch)'s name to rescue his brother D'avin, Khlyen assumed Dutch was ready and reappeared in her life. He tasked her with various missions, threatening to kill John if she does not meet his requirements. He later abducts D'avin and has him brought to a secret Red 17 base on Arkyn, hoping to turn him Hullen so he could better protect Dutch. D'avin proves resistant to the transformation and rejects the plasma from his body, prompting Khlyen to help him escape. He later sacrifices his life to poison the plasma tree Aneela stored in Archive, which renders the Level Sixes created on Arkyn human again.[9]
Between seasons 4 and 5, the Lady pulls him out of the Green, restoring him to life as a human.
Personality[]
Due to his transformation cutting off his emotions, Khlyen is largely unable to realize the emotional damage he caused to Aneela and Dutch. As he tells Dutch before his death, he believed that his treatment of them was justified as long as they were both alive and (in his eyes) safe. After being brought back to life by the Lady and regaining his human emotions, he realizes the harm he caused to his daughters and spends the entirety of season 5 attempting to make up for it. However, due to being stuck in a toxic pattern for so long, he has difficulty doing so and ends up causing them more distress.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like all Hullen, Khlyen possesses superhuman strength and regenerative abilities. He excels at hand-to-hand combat, and is also very knowledgeable about poisons.
